CapSpecialty® is seeking a Vice President, Head of Claims.  This is an executive leadership role reporting to the General Counsel and leading a team of approximately 40. This highly motivated and influential individual will provide strategic planning and leadership for the department and improve efficiency and quality through coaching, mentoring, and developing a high-performance staff.  This leader will be responsible for delivering timely, fair and accurate claims handling, compliance with applicable state laws, and excellent customer service.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Setting and executing the Claims strategy
  • Partnering with other executive stakeholders to ensure the overall success and profitability of CapSpecialty
  • Leading claims management and operations, setting service standards, defining procedures, and exceeding customer expectations
  • Managing claims costs, loss adjustment expenses, and overall financial results for the organization
  • Working with technology and operations functions to set, and monitor compliance with, service standards
  • Identifying and leading implementation of, and migration to, a new claims technology platform
  • Selecting and overseeing third-party administrators and other vendor partners in their delivery of cost-effective services that meet our and our regulators' and insureds' standards
  • Managing outside counsel, including defense and coverage counsel, and overseeing any bad-faith litigation
  • Partnering with actuarial, finance and other stakeholders to ensure timely, accurate reporting of our reserves and expenses
  • Overseeing all recovery and subrogation activity, monitoring vendors, and approving significant settlements
  • Engaging with reinsurers to provide notice of claims, overseeing reinsurers' claims audits, and supporting treaty renewals and recoveries
  • Reporting internally on claim developments, reserves, and industry trends
  • Partnering with underwriting and actuarial to ensure loss trends are promptly reflected in pricing
  • Hiring, training and leading a large organization filled with talented, multidisciplinary professionals in a fast-paced, challenging environment
  • Representing CapSpecialty as Chief Claims Officer at industry events

CapSpecialty has claims professionals in its offices in Middleton, WI, and Hartford, CT, as well as remote workers. This leader will be located in either Middleton or Hartford. Our team handles claims under general liability, construction, environmental, property, healthcare, and professional liability policies, as well as surety bonds.  The claims, many of which are litigated, arise in all 50 states. 

Education & Experience:

  • J.D. preferred, or a graduate degree in Business or Management
  • 20+ years of insurance claims handling across a variety of admitted and nonadmitted property/casualty and surety lines, or related litigation defense experience 
  • 10+ years of leading a team of highly skilled claims professionals
